Testosterone Deficiency and Depression in Aging Men: Pathogenic and Therapeutic Implications
(J Gend Specif Med 2001;4[2]:44-48)
The effects of testosterone deficiency are similar to those of the aging process itself: decreased musculoskeletal mass, increased adipose deposition, decreased hematopoiesis, and decreased facial hair growth, as well as decreased libido, energy, mood, and memory.2-4 In younger hypogonadal men, testosterone replacement consistently reverses these sequelae. Body weight, fat-free muscle mass, and muscle size and strength increase; continued bone loss is prevented; sexual function and secondary sex characteristics (eg, facial hair) are restored and maintained; and hematocrit increases.1,5-8 The application of a testosterone replacement strategy for older men with low or low-normal testosterone levels is thought by some investigators to be especially promising for reversing the effects of aging on bones and muscle mass, as well as for enhancing mood, energy, cognition, and libido.1,5,9
